Upper Marlboro Community Information

Upper Marlboro was settled around 1696 and named after the first Duke of Marlborough, John Churchill-an ancestor of Winston Churchill. It was established as a port town for tobacco ships in 1706 when the western branch of the Patuxent River was still navigable. Although the tobacco fields have long given way to modern development, Upper Marlboro is still the seat of Prince George's County. It hosts the administrative bustle of a county seat by day and relaxes into a quiet country town by night. Residents value the old-town country atmosphere of their historical community, with many old homes and streets reflecting the grace and beauty of a bygone era. Marlborough Day is the annual town festival celebrating the Town of Upper Marlboro's rich heritage.

For 250 years, Upper Marlboro has also been the equestrian capital of southern Maryland. Two of the area's most prominent attractions - the Prince George's Equestrian Center and Show Place Arena and the Prince George's County Court House - reflect how the area's unique history has withstood the test of time. The equestrian center hosts not only horseracing events but basketball tournaments, concerts and more. It is also the site of the Prince George's County Fair Ground, home of the annual Prince George's County Fair. The Show Place Arena is home to the Maryland Mustangs. Other popular attractions in Upper Marlboro are the Billingsley House Museum, Darnall's Chance House Museum, Duvall Tool Museum and the Tobacco Farming Museum. Of course, the world-class cultural and recreational opportunities of metropolitan Washington, D.C. are only a short distance away.
